Ritz Hotel London

The Ritz Hotel London is a luxury 5-star hotel in London U.K., opened in 1906 by hotelier Cesar Ritz and located in Piccadilly, overlooking Green Park and just 500 yards from Buckingham Palace. The Ritz Hotel London is famous throughout the world for its grandeur, high standards of service and beautiful Louis XVI decor.

From the minute you walk through the entrance, you will be astounded by the sheer beauty and luxury of this hotel. The attention to detail is incredible, the service exceptional and the staff helpful but unobtrusive. For the last 100 years, this hotel has been the benchmark for excellence that all other hotels aspire to!

If you want to give yourself a real treat, then book into the Ritz Hotel London, but be aware that this kind of opulence doesn't come cheap! You can expect to pay around $600 per night for a Superior King room, nearly double that for a Junior Suite, around $2,000 for a Deluxe Suite, all the way up to around $5,000 for a night in the Prince of Wales 2-Bedroom Suite with its own butler!

The best deals and lowest rates I've found are around $600 per night with Expedia and Travelocity websites. Once I found a rate for $430 per night for the Superior King room with Orbitz. Make sure you check all three sites for the best deal - just enter Ritz Hotel London in their search box.

Each room has been fully restored with beautiful period interiors and most of the suites have the facility to connect further rooms to them. The level of service is truly amazing - this is possible by having a ratio of over two staff to every room.

Some of the amenities you can expect from this luxurious hotel are:

  • Casino
  • Elevator
  • Garden
  • Restaurant(s) in hotel
  • Shopping on site
  • Video library
  • Rooftop terrace
  • Bathrobes/slippers
  • Bathroom phone
  • Complimentary toiletries
  • Extra towels/bedding in room
  • In-room safe
  • Complimentary newspaper
  • Shoe shine
  • Beauty services
  • Currency exchange
  • Fitness facilities/spa and massage rooms
  • Room service (24 hours)
  • 24-hour front desk

You can also book transportation from the airport to the hotel, but this will cost you extra, around $140 each way. You may also hire the hotel's own Rolls Royce with its personalized number plate - you will feel like royalty being driven around London!

Now if all of this is a little bit out of your league but you still fancy experiencing a bit of the Ritz Hotel London glamor, then consider going for a cocktail in the Rivoli Bar open from late morning until the early hours or, better still, why not try Afternoon Tea at the Ritz.

Tea at the Ritz Hotel London is as famous as the hotel itself. It is served in the beautiful Palm Court, beneath a glass ceiling hung with chandeliers. Butter-colored walls, grand marble columns, and a fountain adorned with golden cherubs complete the scene. Tea is served from 11:30 a.m. through 7:30 p.m. every day.

The traditional English Tea Menu includes freshly cut sandwiches with smoked salmon, cucumber, egg mayonnaise, roast ham and Cheddar cheese fillings. The finger sandwiches are served on a three-tier stand, together with freshly baked apple and raisin scones with strawberry preserve and clotted Devonshire cream, followed by a sumptuous selection of afternoon tea cakes and pastries. You can order champagne if you are feeling really decadent!

This amazing experience will cost you around $67 per person, but you do need to book well in advance. For Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, the booking period is approximately four weeks ahead. For reservations on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, the booking period is approximately three to five months ahead.

Top Tips:

  • If you are struggling to make your reservation for Afternoon Tea, try either 11:30 a.m. or 7:30 p.m. as they are the least popular times.
  • A dress code applies for different areas of the hotel: In the Ritz Restaurant and The Palm Court, gentlemen are required to wear a jacket and tie; jeans are not permitted. For the Rivoli Bar, smart attire is a must. Please note that tennis, sneakers and sports shoes are not permitted in The Ritz Restaurant, The Rivoli Bar or The Palm Court at any time.
  • There is a minimum spend of $35 per person in the Rivoli Bar - don't worry, it's easy to do!
  • The Happy Families program offers families a complimentary inter-connecting room for children when they book a Deluxe Room. Younger guests will also become members of the Kids @ the Ritz club, offering such privileges as unlimited ice-cream, a welcome gift upon arrival, access to the Hotel's Teen Concierge and complimentary breakfast.
  • The nearest tube station is Green Park

The Ritz Hotel London is the ultimate in luxury hotels and will give you a taste of the quintessential life of the English gentry. It is well worth a visit and should certainly leave you with some very special memories! In the immortal words of Noel Coward, why don't you try 'Puttin' on the Ritz'
