Tower of London Tickets

To visit the Tower of London, you will need to purchase Tower of London tickets; they are available for purchase from the kiosk at the Tower of London; however it is cheaper to order tickets online. My favorite place to order these tickets is Expedia before I go to London. You can get a Skip the Line: Tower of London ticket there under the category "Things to Do" for around $30.00.

The Tower of London is visible from the River Thames and is an absolute hotspot for sightseers and tourists. It was built by William the Conqueror in the 1070's as a show of French strength after he defeated King Harold at the Battle of Hastings. So much history!

As well as housing many monarchs, the Tower is famous for its dungeons, beheadings and hangings! One of its most famous prisoners (apart from Queen's Ann Boleyn and Katherine Howard, two of the wives of Henry VIII) was Guy Fawkes who tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605. The English still celebrate this event with fireworks and bonfires on the 5th of November each year!

Visitors can also view the Crown Jewels, which are regularly used by the Queen. The British monarchy is the only monarchy in Europe that still uses its Crown Jewels in coronation ceremonies. The last time was the Queen Elizabeth II's Coronation in 1953.

The Imperial State Crown is worn by the Queen at each State Opening of Parliament. Even though it is one of the younger crowns in the collection, it holds a number of much older gems. The crown was remade in 1937 after the previous frame weakened under the weight of the gemstones. The Jewels are guarded by armed Yeomen Warders called "Beefeaters."

The Tower's history includes legends such as the "Six Ravens Legend." Legend says that the Kingdom and Tower will fall if the six resident ravens ever leave the fortress. Six ravens are always kept at the Tower. At the moment, seven ravens reside there - the required six plus one spare! They can usually be found by their lodging area in Wakefield Tower or next to the White Tower.

There is also the legend of the ghost of Lady Jane Grey who has been sighted in the Salt Tower - although it has been a while since she was last seen - maybe you'll see her!

When you purchase Tower of London tickets, you can expect access to the whole castle. The Tower of London official website has given some ideas if you don't know where to start.
